The Senegal Parrot (Poicephalus senegalus) is a intermediate-level companion bird that can live around 25-30 years — a long commitment. Here is how to care for one properly: housing, diet, health, temperament and enrichment, based on avian-veterinary guidance.

Quick facts

Care level Intermediate
Lifespan 25-30 years
Adult size 23 cm
Noise level Moderate
Talking ability Some
Best for Intermediate keepers and quieter households wanting a smaller, long-lived parrot that is calmer than a conure

Housing a Senegal Parrot

Minimum recommended cage: 90 x 90 x 120 cm (VCA minimum). Bigger is always better — birds fly horizontally, so width matters more than height. Provide varied natural-wood perches of different diameters, and place the cage in a social, draught-free part of the home away from the kitchen (cooking fumes, especially from non-stick cookware, are deadly to birds).

What to feed a Senegal Parrot

Staple: Formulated pellets as 60-70% of the diet with only minimal seed

Fresh foods: Fresh vegetables and leafy greens make up 20-40% of the diet (e.g. dark leafy greens, carrot, broccoli); fruit limited to about 10%; avoid low-value watery items like iceberg lettuce and celery

Foods that are toxic to your Senegal Parrot — never feed these

Avocado, onions and apple seeds (specifically listed as toxic by VCA), plus chocolate, caffeine (coffee/tea/soda) and alcohol; also avoid salty/sugary processed human foods

Temperament & social needs

Self-assured, charming and playful with a softer, quieter voice than larger parrots; can become one-person and territorial.

Social but more independent than many parrots; needs consistent daily interaction and 1-3 hours out-of-cage time

Enrichment

Intelligent and needs foraging toys, chewables and rotated enrichment to prevent boredom

Common health problems in Senegal Parrot

Aspergillosis (fungal respiratory disease, common in Poicephalus), vitamin A deficiency and obesity/fatty liver from seed-heavy diets, and psittacosis

Birds hide illness until they are seriously unwell — a bird that looks "off" is an emergency. Establish care with an avian vet before you need one, and schedule an annual well-bird check.
