About Birbs
We're building a genuinely trustworthy, delightful home for everything birds — from cute birbs to serious birding.
Birds are everywhere, and the love of them is too. It's in the dawn chorus you can't name, the hawk on the highway lamppost, the feeder you keep refilling, the photo a stranger posts that stops your scroll cold. That love is enormous — and online, it's scattered across a hundred half-right blog posts, dead forums, and confident captions that turn out to be wrong.
Birbs exists to gather it into one place worth trusting. We started where a lot of you already are: a global flock of bird people across Facebook and Instagram, sharing the same wonder one post at a time. This is us building that flock a real home — an owned, lasting, fact-checked place for the whole spectrum of caring about birds.
Everything birds. From cute birbs to serious birding — and everyone in between.
Why we built this
A feed is a wonderful place to fall in love with birds and a terrible place to look something up. Posts vanish. Sources go uncredited. The same myth gets reshared until it feels like fact. Meanwhile the genuinely good information — the kind ornithologists and field guides rely on — sits behind jargon, paywalls, or PDFs nobody outside research ever opens.
We wanted the in-between to exist: as warm and beautiful as your favorite bird account, as rigorous as the data underneath it. A place where the casual admirer who just wants to know what that blue bird was, and the lister chasing a lifer, are equally at home — and equally well served.
What makes us different: real data, radically honest
Birbs is built on real, open science — not vibes. Our species pages draw on the IOC World Bird List for taxonomy, AVONET (Tobias et al., 2022) for body mass and ecology, the IUCN Red List for conservation status, and eBird and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for where birds actually occur. Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under open licenses, always credited.
Underneath all of it sits one rule we will not bend.
Honesty is the whole platform, not a footer. Affiliate links are always disclosed and never change what we recommend. Editorial is never for sale. And when we get something wrong — we will, eventually — we want to hear it and fix it in the open.
- We never fabricate. No invented biology, no made-up numbers, no fake reviews, no fictional testimonials. If we don't have it from real data, we don't claim it.
- We show our sources. Every fact is derived from real datasets or stated plainly as an estimate.
- We welcome corrections — visibly. Found a mistake? /submit-correction/ goes straight to us, and good fixes get credited.
- We disclose money. Affiliate links are clearly marked; recommendations are made on the merits, full stop.
If a number would look impressive but we can't stand behind it, we leave it out. Every time.
What you'll find here
Birbs is one platform with many doors in. Wherever you are on the spectrum from "that bird is so cute" to "I need to confirm this subspecies," there's a way in for you.
- A bird encyclopedia spanning 11,227 species — taxonomy, size, range, and conservation status, sourced and credited.
- Identify a Bird (/bird-id/) — narrow down what you saw without needing to already know the answer.
- Honest buying guides (/guides/) — feeders, binoculars, seed, cameras — with affiliate links disclosed and never bought.
- Bird sounds, pet-care guides, birdwatching tips, quizzes, and your own personal life list to track what you've seen.
- Near Me (/near-me/) — what's around you right now, and where to go looking.
What we believe
A few values shape every page we publish. They're not a manifesto on a wall; they're the rules we actually edit by.
- Truth over impressive. We'd rather be right and modest than dazzling and wrong.
- Beauty and rigor, together. Accurate doesn't have to mean dull, and delightful doesn't have to mean fluffy.
- Everyone's welcome at the feeder. The newcomer and the expert get the same care.
- Credit where it's due. Scientists, photographers, and contributors get named.
- Birds first. We care about the real ones out there — accuracy serves them, not just us.

Common questions
Where does your information come from?
Real, open scientific datasets: the IOC World Bird List (taxonomy), AVONET / Tobias et al. 2022 (body mass and ecology), the IUCN Red List (conservation status), and eBird / the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (occurrence). Photos come from Wikimedia Commons under open licenses, always credited. Anything that isn't directly from data is clearly framed as an estimate.
Do you make money from the links in your guides?
Sometimes, yes — through clearly marked affiliate links (like Amazon Associates) and sponsored partnerships with brands we genuinely believe in. Here's the line we never cross: money never changes what we recommend, and there's no pay-for-placement in editorial. Disclosure is always visible.
What does "radically honest" actually mean?
It means nothing on Birbs is fabricated — no invented biology, no made-up statistics, no fake reviews or testimonials. Facts are derived from real data or labeled as estimates. And when we get something wrong, we welcome corrections and fix them in the open.
I think a page has an error. What do I do?
Tell us — please. Head to /submit-correction/ and send it our way. We take corrections seriously, fix them visibly, and credit good catches.
Is Birbs for casual bird lovers or serious birders?
Both, on purpose. The encyclopedia, Identify a Bird, and cute-birb side welcome anyone who just loves birds; the life list, detailed species data, and birdwatching tools serve dedicated birders. Same platform, same care, whichever door you came in.
How do I stay in touch?
