Want to bring Purple Martin (Progne subis) to your yard? Here is the honest, data-backed version — the feeders and food they actually use, whether they will take a nest box, and the habitat that keeps them coming back. Every recommendation is drawn from real bird-science sources (the Cornell Lab, Audubon and their peers), not guesswork.

Does Purple Martin visit feeders?

Purple Martin does not typically come to seed feeders. Rather than a feeder, the way to attract it is the right habitat, water and plantings — see below.

Will Purple Martin use a nest box?

Purple Martin will use a nest structure, but the right design is specialised — follow NestWatch's species plan for exact dimensions and placement rather than a generic box.

How to attract Purple Martin to your yard

Aerial insectivore that forages entirely on the wing and does not visit feeders; in the East almost the entire population now nests in human-supplied housing. Attract a colony with a multi-compartment martin house or a cluster of hollow/plastic gourds on a tall pole. NestWatch placement: mount ~10-15 ft up, entrances facing south or west, compartments/gourds spaced ~10 ft, in a wide-open area with no trees or buildings within ~60 ft in any direction. White housing is most attractive; do not paint the interior. Open habitat near water is ideal. NOTE: compartment floor and entrance-hole dimensions appear only in NestWatch's downloadable plan (not the web page), so nest_box dimensions are left null rather than fabricated; ~10-15 ft is the confirmed mount height.
