The quickest tell is size: the Bald Eagle is noticeably heavier (around 4.7 kg) than the Osprey (around 1.5 kg). Here is how the two compare across every fact we track.

How to tell them apart in the field

Osprey is white below with a kinked 'M'/gull-wing profile, a black wrist (carpal) patch, and a dark eye-stripe; Bald Eagle is a much bulkier all-dark-bodied bird that soars on flat, plank-straight wings (adults with a clean white head and tail).

Field mark Osprey Bald Eagle
Underparts Bright white belly, breast and wing linings (only the wrists and flight feathers dark) Dark brown body underneath at all ages — never a clean white belly
Wing profile (flight) Distinct kink/crook at the wrist, forming a shallow 'M' or gull-wing; wings held slightly arched above horizontal Long, broad, plank-flat wings held straight out; soars and glides on flat wings
Underwing mark Bold black patch at each wrist (carpal patch) on an otherwise pale underwing Underwing dark, without Osprey's clean pale field and black carpal patch
Head White head with a broad dark stripe running back through the eye Adult: fully white head, no eye-stripe. Immature: dark head, but body still dark, not white
Size / build Slimmer, gull-like; wingspan roughly 5–5.5 ft (about 59–72 in); long narrow wings Massive, heavy-bodied; wingspan roughly 6–7.5 ft (about 71–90 in) with a large yellow bill

Telling females & immatures apart: Sexes look alike in both species; the true confusion is age, not sex. Immature Bald Eagles are dark and blotchy and can show messy white in the body/wing linings, but the white is irregular — never Osprey's clean white belly-and-underwing-lining — and they lack the black carpal patch and dark eye-stripe. Osprey also always shows the wing kink and slimmer, gull-like build.
